The Majestic Theatre is located at the corner of 4th Ave. and Main Street and has been a landmark in town since it was first built. W. J. Huntingford built the Majestic Theatre with a moving picture show in 1911. Eph Wolff purchased it the next year, as well as a Heintzman piano which now resides at the Biggar Museum & Gallery. George and Frank Shepherd took possession of the Majestic in 1914. It was enlarged substantially in 1916 and George became the sole owner in 1926. In 1928, the building was expanded, the exterior stuccoed, and the interior was redone. The silent film era ended in 1930 with the first “talkie” show. Joseph and George Shepherd took over in 1945 until 1986 when the theater closed due to major upkeep costs and dwindling audiences.

Majestic Theatre 1930's

The Majestic Theatre in the late 1930's

In the spring of 1991, a group of concerned citizens looked at the possibility of restoring the theatre and opening it to the public once again. A feasibility study was done and it was decided to form a registered non-profit corporation to raise funds, purchase and renovate the building.

The funds needed to purchase the building were raised and the property transfer was completed in May, 1991. The seats were removed and other interior furnishings were placed in storage.

In October, 1991, the basement for the addition was dug and the foundation poured. A government sponsored job training program was used to do the roof replacement, general structural repairs and erection of the shell for the addition as well as countless hours from community volunteers.

The theatre functions as a multi-purpose community center with a varied schedule of programs for all ages and walks of life. In the main theater we have a first-class facility with proper acoustics, lighting, sloped floor seating, and stage. The addition provides two areas for meetings and activities available to the general public. We are currently running first rate movies 3 nights a week with occasional matinées for children.

We are very proud of our theater and hopefully we can keep this landmark of Biggar open to welcome people for many years to come.
